Ready for the Irish Open 2019
Lahinch was the final destination of my trip to Ireland this year. And even if you meet twice as many seagulls as residents on a walk along the sea, the little village has it all. Lahinch (anglicised form of Leath Inse = peninsula) is well known for two things, surfing and golf. The latter was one of the reasons why the 127-year-old Lahinch Golf Club became the proud venue of this year’s Irish Open. When host Paul McGinley kicks off the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open in July, the golfing world will focus on the little village right at the Atlantic.
History and Location
With almost 130 years under its belt, the Lahinch Golf Club looks back at a long history. Designed by none other than golf legend Old Tom Morris and redesigned in 1927 by Alistair MacKenzie, the Old Course is the heart of the club. It will host some of the best players in the world to compete in the Irish Open, a good preparation for the Open Championship. With the Castle Course Lahinch even has 18 more holes of links golf on the North Atlantic to offer. And by the way, the little “peninsula” is located a good 3 hour drive west of Dublin in County Clare.
Kurze Historie
Great Pictures
But let us return to my first impressions of this small tranquil place when we arrived. The first is to see my buddy Fabian showing up way too late and completely exhausted for dinner. This was because just before sunset, Fabian aka goodsundays had gone straight to the course instead for a meal. He took off with the words:“These are going to be just awesome pictures” and was not seen for several hours. To get a glimpse what he meant I have put together some of those gems in the last gallery of this story. My little walk through the village ends with lots of fresh air and some nice snapshots, too. Lahinch is really comfortable and in terms of golfing and surfing it is the place to be. For professional golfer and avid surfer Rafa Cabrera Bello it would have felt like in paradise.
Fotos Fotos Fotos
Lahinch ist richtig gemütlich und in Sachen Golfen und Surfen „the place to be“.
Gotime
The next day it is time to play some tough links golf. Welcomed by the famous goat statue (the goat was incorporated into the logo in 1956) and the starter, we get ready for the expedition Lahinch on the Old Course. To enjoy a 127 year old golf course, I think you have to walk on it. To go even further, you can carry your bag and that is what we do. On the first holes I am completely overwhelmed by the atmosphere and the landscape in front of me. Fairways, dunes, bunkers, greens, sea and nothing else — lovely. The strategy is pretty obvi, don’t hit into a bunker or the dunes. Otherwise you will have to deal with some serious anger management. My strategy is pretty simple, too. Most of the holes on the front nine I play iron off the tee. It pays off and so I am producing some very solid golf. And to be honest, this is when a tough course like Lahinch is even more fun to play on.
Nothing to complain about
The weather is also in our favor. Blue sky and sunshine, this “walk” is one for the ages. On the way, I meet a few goats who are allowed to move freely on the site. Tip of the day: If the goats are close to the clubhouse, bad weather is imminent. If they are on the course, you don’t have to bleat about the weather. I grip it and rip it and make a lot of pictures, which are shown in the next gallery.
Tough but awesome
After the first nine holes Fabi, “Crazy Canuck” Rob and I are completely baffled. Playing on such a golf course is a dream come true. Unfortunately my golf game decides to fall into pieces. Perfect timing, as the back nine of the Old Course are pretty tough. In combination with a fresh breeze, Lahinch suddenly bites back. I’m looking forward to watching the Irish Open on TV and I’m curious if the pros will curse as much as I do. Good shots with wrong wind calculations end in no man’s land, welcome to links golf, folks. For me, it is now time to grind it out, same goes for Fabian and Rob. The fact that I lose some balls in the “do-not-hit-into-this”-rough helps my bag to get lighter. Perfect for walk & carry but bad for the score. On the 18th green the expedition ends with a good par safe, so my mood is great. I am pretty much down and out but I somehow manage to drag myself into the clubhouse. Guess what was waiting for me there? Yes, and I have to say I deserved it.
Harte Nuss

Conclusion
Lahinch, have a great Irish Open! And I hope a lot of golfnuts will head over to play you in the near future. 230 Euros or 260 Dollars are not a gimme, but for a bucket list course it should be worth it. Especially when you combine it with the Castle Course for 45 bucks the next day.
Fazit
